Jetty Island Kids Day: It's about Flora, Fauna and Fun

EVERETT, Wash. – Volunteers, kids and monsters abound on opening day Sandblast at Jetty Island, a nature reserve just a short ferry ride away from downtown Everett.
Everett Parks & Recreation and People For Puget Sound are partnering up to host a combination work party and kids day. Volunteers will remove invasive blackberry and scotch broom bushes in an effort to restore Puget Sound’s native ecosystem and create healthy habitat for birds and other wildlife. Kids will join in a hunt for treasure buried in the Jetty Island sand with the Mud Monster, the popular mascot for the cleanup of Puget Sound. This event is one of many organized to encourage people to “get dirty for the Sound” through the MudUp campaign.
WHERE: Jetty Island, off Everett. The free ferry departs from the 10th Street Boat Launch and Marine Park, at 10th and W. Marine View Drive.
WHEN: Sat. July 5, 2008, work party from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Kids’ activities begin at 11a.m. with flag ceremony followed by the Treasure Hunt.
WHO: Work party volunteers, kids, parents, the Mud Monster and Octo Notto, People For Puget Sound’s octopus mascot.
VIDEO/PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Sandy beaches, nature trails and Puget Sound with Everett Naval Shipyard in view. Volunteers getting dirty and hauling away invasive weeds, kids taking part in a beach treasure hunt and other kids’ activities with the Mud Monster and Octo Notto.
WHY: This event is one of many taking place all over the Sound this summer through MudUp, a campaign to that inspires people to take action and clean up Puget Sound. MudUp provides everyday people with opportunities that combine fun with results that make the Sound a healthier place for us all to enjoy.
