SEATTLE – Volunteers with EarthCorps, Seattle Parks and Recreation and Green Seattle Partnership (GSP) will be working to keep Carkeek Park healthy and happy this summer. They will be planting native trees, shrubs and ground cover, removing harmful invasive plant species like English ivy, and performing restoration site maintenance.
Located
in Northwest Seattle, Carkeek
Park is one of the city's
premier natural areas. There are trails for hiking, amazing views of Puget Sound, and meadows for picnics. Carkeek Park
is also home to Piper's Creek, an important waterway for spawning salmon. This event is part of a larger Puget Sound clean up effort taking place at the state
level and by conservation groups, assisted through the public engagement effort
MudUp.
WHO: Dozens of
volunteers, EarthCorps and Seattle Parks & Rec staff
WHERE: Carkeek Park,
North Seattle. Follow EarthCorps signs to the
event parking/registration area (the “lower meadow” area of the park). For
directions, click here.
WHEN: Sat. Aug. 16
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
WHY: Restoration strives to replicate the
original natural system to support numerous species. As restoration practitioners,
EarthCorps’ goal is to expedite
natural processes in rebuilding a healthy, functioning natural ecosystem. Thanks to work by groups like EarthCorps,
there is now a total of 38 completed miles toward the MudUp three-year goal of
100 miles of restored Puget Sound shoreline.
